American History November 1775

American History November 1775

In November 1775, the American Revolutionary War saw significant events, including Lord Dunmore's Proclamation offering freedom to enslaved people who joined the British in Virginia, the formation of the Continental Marines by the Continental Congress, and General Montgomery's capture of Montreal from the British.

Lord Dunmore's Proclamation (November 7, 1775)

The British governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, issued a proclamation declaring martial law and offering freedom to enslaved people and indentured servants who were able to fight for the king.

This was the first large-scale emancipation of enslaved people by the British during the war, and it inspired thousands to seek freedom by joining British forces throughout the conflict.

Formation of the Continental Marines (November 10, 1775)

The Continental Congress adopted a resolution, drafted by John Adams, that created two battalions of Marines for the recently formed Continental Navy.

November 10, 1775, is now recognized as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps.

Capture of Montreal (November 13, 1775)

Continental Army Brigadier General Richard Montgomery successfully captured Montreal, Canada, from the British without a fight.

This victory came after an earlier failed attack on Montreal by American forces led by Ethan Allen in September.
